The Dress for Success program is free professional clothing for women rejoining the workplace that have been referred by a government agency. In order to visit the boutique, the candidate must already have an interview lined up for a job. Once the qualifications are met, the program furnishes the women with “everything we can give them to have a polished look” according to emcee Julie Moss at the March 26th runway business fashion show. Moss was also available to answer some important audience questions about achieving the “professional look”:
Q: Are skirts better for business than pants?
A: It depends on the individual and their routine. Pants are probably best if you have a long commute or use public transportation.
Q: Are sleeveless tops appropriate businesswear?
A:With a jacket on, it’s not an issue, but otherwise it depends on the workplace environment. Sleeveless is a nice option because women tend to run “hot and cold”.
Q: Hair up or down?
A: Whatever’s most comfortable is best. It’s important to look good in a professional way, without look like you’re going out for drinks. The best advice is to keep your hair clean and off your face.
Q: What is appropriate for casual Friday?
A: Remember casual Friday is for looking comfy, not sloppy. It’s not an invitation to show up to work after just rolling out of bed.
